Bringing chairs back to life...

Antique and Modern upholstery in Bristol,
Bath and surrounding areas

About Me

My Background and Obsession with Chairs

A long, long time ago I discovered I had a slightly strange obsession with armchairs! I love them. But I always wanted them to look slightly different, less padded, more padded, different fabric, softer seat, harder seat...

But, instead of drifting off into a strange fantasy land with

bears and porridge, I booked myself onto an evening course

to learn upholstery.

A few months later, still a total novice but loving every second, I noticed an upholstery company in Bath, called Walcot Upholstery, were advertising for an upholsterer. I rang them. I had nothing to lose and the rest, as they say, is history.

I worked at Walcot Upholstery for 10 years with the best two bosses anyone could ask for. I mean they gave me a job, with no experience, taught me everything I know and paid me too!  But, all good things must come to an end and they are moving on to bigger and better things, otherwise known as retirement.

Hence the creation of Gem Bateman Upholstery.

My obsession with chairs hasn't changed. I am still just as dedicated to bringing new life to chairs using the skills I have learnt over the years. I would love to hear from you and possibly have the opportunity to transform your furniture.

What do I do?

Antique and Modern Upholstery and Reupholstery

Armchairs, stools, headboards, 2 seater sofas, dining chairs...basically anything that I can manage to move/lift on my own, that rules out any 3 seaters I'm afraid.

The Process

1. Coming to meet you and your lovely furniture

2. Sending you an estimate

3. Getting you booked in

I will come to you to measure up and discuss all your options, ensuring your vision is realised with precision and flair. My consultations offer a personalised approach, taking the time to understand your needs and preferences to create a tailored upholstery plan resulting in chairs that reflect your personality and lifestyle.

I will go home and put together an estimate for you. In the estimate I will let you know how much fabric you need to buy. If fabric is a mystery to you, don't worry, I will give you advice on where to look.

If you are happy with your estimate then I will get you booked in at my nearest available time. You just need to make sure you have your fabric by then. I will come and pick up your lovely furniture and drop it back to you when I have finished. Usually, I will only need to have it for a couple of weeks.

Where do I do it?

I am an upholsterer located between Bristol and Bath in a

village called Oldland Common.

So, if you are in Bristol, Bath, Keynsham or the surrounding areas, please get in touch.

Passion for Chairs

My passion for chairs means your furniture will be in good hands. I promise to look after it like it's my own. I will probably give it a little pampering while its here too. A little wax rub goes a long way.
